Storyboard 02

Second storyboard composition illustrating a key point from the narrative.

For the rough sleeper, the sea provides a more tranquil and less intimidating backdrop for mental rehabilitation. Looking at the coastline as an ‘escape’, the individual is able to retreat to a setting which promotes the release of emotions - the sea as a metaphor for reflecting on the past and looking toward the future. The destructive / constructive cycles of  the tides are equally representative of the art therapy process.

Project 3b+c: Refuge on the Periphery

Storyboard 01

First of two collages illustrating a key point within the journey outlined by the narrative.

Due to the traumas associated with mental illness and homelessness, perceptions of the city and the self may become distorted for the rough sleeper. In this first composition, the environment of the city and its fast-paced rhythms create an over-bearing presence; intimidating the rough sleeper and causing them to adopt a more peripheral viewpoint.

Site Analysis

Looking at the West Hoe site within its immediate surroundings, and the context of the city. Social factors (psychological therapy centres/services and art galleries) have been also been mapped.
